City

The first term I was working on this topic with my 6th graders.

We decided to create a small game in which each student created their favorite city building with a small model, so the class became a mini city.

Then to work on the directions, questions of places and vocabulary, each student prepared a small speech explaining their work and the characteristics of their establishment, then we made a roll play in which the students played the role of tourists lost in the city looking for the airport, hospital ...

It was a very fun activity that they enjoyed very much.

I leave you some pictures of the models.

Battleships

One of the games that I love to use to practice questions with my students is the battleship.

Here I let you an example and how to play it:

P1: Does your mum drink coffee? P2: No, she doesn’t. –> water!
P1: Do you like onions? P2: Yes, I do –> hit!
P1: Does your mum like onions? P2: Yes, she does –> hit and sunk!

ABC Countdown

This is my favourite game: ABC Countdown.

Can you thin of the Can you think of one word in English that begins with each letter of the alphabet? Animal, banana, computer... Can you continue until z? Then, we can talk about what's our favourite word in English?

Cluedo

To work on the parts of the house with my 6th graders I wanted to use a game that is well known to everyone. "CLUEDO"

I have adapted it so that it is much easier to play and at the same time to have fun guessing the murderer, students work on the parts of the house.

In addition we can change the parts of the house that we want to work on the different boards and thus have more variety, as well as the weapons of the assassins we can use vocabulary related to each part of the house.

They are delighted with this game.

I leave you an example of board that I have found.

House and family

Last year I worked with my 2nd grade students on this vocabulary game about the family.

The students move the cards of the family members through the different spaces of the house and explain where each one is.

We also can work on this game by writing the sentences in their notebook.

For example: My mother is in the kitchen

Witch calls color

This game also works for Halloween because the main character is a witch, but the character can be changed, the main objective is for children to learn and remember the colors in English. It is aimed at children of 3 and 4 years old, and with the help of their classmates they will also know colors better. Before starting, we can show them different object and say the color.

First, the teacher will be the witch and call out a color. As soon as she says it, they have to touch an object of the color that it is said as quickly as possible. If the witch touches them before they do, they will relieve her in her role. The boy or girl who has done the best can also change into the witch to be the person who says the color. The difficulty will increase when less classic colors are said such as gray or gold.

Augmented Reality Christmas

Using the Quiver app, children have fun and are attracted to see the final result. This application can be used with various levels, preeschool and primary, because the application allows you to download different coloring sheets.

After dealing with the subject, in this case Christmas, the children will color a sheet with a Christmas picture that, when colored, with the Quiver application that must be previously downloaded to our mobile phone, a photo will be taken. Children can interact with the image because they can see it on the mobile screen.

With the 3 and 4 year old children we have been learning vocabulary about Christmas such as: Christmas tree, Santa, snow ... elements that they can now name in augmented reality.

I am thankful for...

On Thanksgiving Day I explained my students about the history of this festivity, the tradition in the USA and how people celebrate it.

With 3rd and 4th grade students you can do the following activity.

The objective is to practice the structure 'I am thankful for...' and to practice speaking in English. Firstly, ask students what they are thankful for, for which things they should give thanks. Speak a bit in the classroom. Then, ask them to draw a turkey with their hand and write in each of their fingers one of the things they are thankful for. They can also decorate it. Students will enjoy it.

Roll a Jack-o-lantern

Here I share with you a funny game about Halloween that I used with my Infant classroom (3 to 6 years old) to practice the face vocabulary with pumpkins.

A student rolls a dice and comes to the blackboard to draw the part of the face that he or she is asked to. Then, another kid does the same with the next face part and so on until the Jack O'Lantern is completed. They enjoy drawing a lot on the blackboard. I hope you can give it a try.

Chinese whispers

This game is the same as what we would call in Spanish El telefono escacharrado. I have included it in abilities because the main objective of this game is to recognize the word in English and say it correctly until the last participant.

This game is made with children of 4 and 5 years old, although it can be played with older children who are able to fix the pronunciation and to recognise  English words.

To play this game, the children are put in a circle sitting or standing, and the teacher will begin by saying a word to the ear of the first child. This word will have to be said  to the next child to the ear and in a low voice, until the last one who will have to say the word that he has understood aloud. It can only be repeated once, twice if they are very young, because this is how it is checked if they are able to recognize the word that has been transmitted and if their pronunciation has been correct.

We usually use words that we have just been studing in the unit that have been covered or words that we already know from previous units in order  to review and check if they have been fixed or we have to recall some concepts and vocabulary.

Finally, If the phone has broken down, that is, the word said by the last child is not the correct, the order of the participants is changed. With the older ones, the one who has broken the phone is eliminated, but with the younger ones it is interesting that they participate to improve in the next round.

Brush or wash

Brush or wash..: The main objetive of this game is to work daily routines and remember related vocabulary. This is a difficult task with 4- and 5-year-olds, but pictures or flash cards can be kept in class so that the children get used to them and remember the vocabulary.

We can make the drawings or have 4 flashcards in which two of them the main action is with the verb wash and another two in which the verb or action is brush.

In one drawing or flash card the action it will be Wash your hands, in another it will be Wash your face and in another two with the brush action it will be Brush your teeth and brush your hair. After working on the actions of the drawings for several days and repeating the action that each drawing represents as in a mirror, this game is played which consists of distributing the four flash cards among the students, they must stand in front of the others but cover the drawing to their classmates.

Then one by one he asks a colleague who they want, of those who are standing, Do you have brush your teeth? If the answer is no, the next student is who can ask to the same partner or change to another.

The game ends when all the flashcards or actions have been told because it is necessary to remember those that have already been said and have been eliminated to remember those that are still in the game.

I attach an example although we will use the action: Brush your hair to make it easier for children to learn this vocabulary at first.

Roll the dice: Daily routines

To work the daily routines, the hours and the present simple, create this small board.

Students must roll a die twice and depending on the two numbers they have to create a present simple sentence with the routine, the subject and the time they have been given.

In addition, with the students of higher grades, we can vary and ask for sentences in negative, interrogative and affirmative.

I hope you like it

Alphabet game

I share with you a video I created during the quarantine with a game to work on any vocabulary topic through the alphabet.

It is a well known game but the main idea is that students can create it themselves and play it at home to review vocabulary.
I hope you like it!

Shopping list

 How do you play?

The game is super simple. You must divide your class into groups. Normally, when I have small groups, I make teams of 3 to 4 people. Each group should have a shopping list that you will find in the PDF (each group should have a different shopping list). You will have to print the food and cut it out. What I usually do is separate the food by color and put it in different boxes.

Once you have the boxes ready, you should take them out of class. The main objective is that the students are in class with the shopping list and that one of the group goes to look for an ingredient that is missing. When you find it, you will have to high-five the next one so that this other one can come out to find another ingredient for the list, and so on. The first group to collect all the ingredients on the list will win.

I go shopping

 "I go shopping"

It's about carrying out a small market in class.

The students work in pairs, one of the couple writes 5 things on the shopping list and gives it to his partner who must go to "do the shopping in the supermarket of class"

When you return with the purchase made between the two of you, you must say the words and see that everything has been bought.

Then we exchange roles.

After a few days of playing, we can remove several wordcards and they have to remember the names and write them down.

The role of the teacher in this case, is to supervise the shopping lists, that it is well written.

 Memory Game. Zoo Land Animals:

How to play:

Click on a tile to reveal the hidden word. Click on another card to make a pair. Once the correct pair is made, the student has to write their name on a piece of paper and say it out loud for the whole class.
The game will end when all the tiles are complete.
This game is good for developing memory and vocabulary in ages 4-5.

Bingo with animals

 Bingo with animals.

It is a very easy activity for children, and it can help us to practice the vocabulary they know. We can prepare it based on various themes. In this case with the animals that we are learning how they can be from the jungle and from the farm. We carry out this activity with children of 3, 4 and 5 years old, the older they are, the more different animals we include in our bingo. The main objective is to memorize the names of the animals that we have already seen in class, in addition to improve auditory and visual attention, increasing concentration capacity and waiting times and facilitating a cooperative environment, when carrying out the group activity.

The materials needed are cards with images, stickers or cards to mark the drawings, audio player, tracks of each sound, we can also use YouTube.
How is the game: One or two cards (cards) are distributed to each child. The pictures in the cards are: Jungle animals and farm or domestic animals. At random, we will play the sound tracks and as they sound, the children will have to recognize them and search their cardboard to see if they have that animal, in this case placing a token or sticker on the drawing. The goal for them is to complete a line and then the entire card. One variable is to do it in two groups with several cards each. As a prize they can take a sticker or be the protagonist of the day.

“SWAT”

 “SWAT” :

Divide the students into two teams (A and B) and give each team member a number. Some students have wrote simple vocabulary on the blackboard. Have each team line up at the back of the room and give each team a fly swatter. The teacher or a child give a description of one of the words on the board, e.g. 'It's something you write with'. Then, call out a number. The two students with that number run to the board with their fly swatter to find the word that matches the description (e.g. PENCIL). The first student to swat the correct word scores a point for their team. Then, another description is given and so on. The game continues until all the words have been used. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner.

Jobs' Cards game

I have who has game can be used with all the vocabulary topics we work on in class.

For those of you who don't know it, the instructions are very simple.

All the cards are dealt to the group of students who play the game and one of the students starts randomly saying "I have president, who has firefighter" and throws his card, whoever has firefighter must throw his card saying "I have firefighter who has...

This is a way to review the vocabulary in written and spoken form.

We can work with pictures of the vocabulary instead of words, or mix the two for younger students.
